History and Background
For more than 16 years, IM=X® Pilates has been an innovator in the pilates, fitness, yoga and back care industries. IM=X (Integrated Movement Xercize) is a new generation of reformer pilates and cardio inspired workouts enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of exercise enthusiasts who proclaim its “immediate results”! Founder, Elyse McNergney, created IM=X to offer a total fitness approach – one that integrates pilates exercises with strength and cardiovascular training.
The IM=X® Pilates vision grew out of Elyse’s certifications in traditional pilates and the Alexander Technique, a M.A. in Movement Science and a M.Ed. in Exercise Physiology from Columbia University. Elyse and the IM=X® Master Trainer team have extensive experience training and rehabilitating professional athletes, dancers and patients with back pain. IM=X® Pilates has been featured at numerous health and fitness conventions including World Fitness IDEA Conference, the IDEA Mind/Body Conference, ECA, the World Spinning Conference, and the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Conference. In addition, the IM=X Pilates DVD series has been sold world-wide. You are in good hands with the IM=X® Pilates certified instructors and personal trainers.
What is IM=X® (pronounced IMX)?
IM=X stands for Integrated Movement Xercize. It’s an elite fitness formula that marries the muscle toning and lengthening benefits of pilates with elements of strength and cardio training. It helps increase flexibility, endurance and muscle tone, while strengthening the spine and abdominal core. IM=X also incorporates its own ballet bar, cycling, tower, yoga and mat routines using weights.
How does IM=X® differ from Pilates?
Joseph Pilates developed the traditional pilates system in the 1930’s. He was an amazing inventor but in the height of his program development he was working with professional dancers not the general “fit” public. He also did not have the advantage of modern science to guide his choices in alignment, muscle recruitment, and stabilization practices. IM=X® Pilates updates traditional concepts and practices reflecting the newest research on fitness and rehabilitation. For this reason, IM=X® has been described as the “next evolution of Pilates”. IM=X® Pilates adds resistance and cardio training so that you can receive all of the benefits in one program. The IM=X® Pilates Reformer (Xercizer) sequences are more fatigue oriented, and the “choreography” focuses on addressing the strength of muscle synergies through innovative program options: Stretch, Cardio, Abs, Upper Body, Lower Body, Interval Training, Pre/Postnatal, and Golf/Tennis. Additionally, IM=X® has other unique programs such as IM=X® Yoga, Ballet Bar, Cycle/Tower, Jog Board and Spinal Fitness.
IM=X is a cross-conditioning system that includes pilates moves but adds resistance training and plyometric jumps for a more athletically oriented workout, so you can tone up and lose inches quickly. IM=X pilates workouts can be tailored towards athletes as well as clients who suffer from back pain, are pregnant, or are looking to lose weight. Examples of such targeted routines are the Lower Body Workout, Interval Training Workout, Stretch Workout, Basics, or the Upper Body Workout. The variation within IM=X makes it possible to address everyone from the “couch potato” to the professional athlete. Its total cross conditioning success!
Who can benefit from IM=X® training?
Everyone — from fitness newbies to hard-core gym rats — can benefit from IM=X. The program has been proven effective for all body types and fitness levels, regardless of age, weight or ability. There are specialized IM=X formats designed for weight loss, athletes, pregnancy, golf and people with back pain. And, the IM=X Pilates Studios offer Semi-Private Training Memberships (small group) so that you can receive the attention of a certified trainer without the price of one-on-one sessions.
What kind of results can be achieved with IM=X® workouts?
The combination of strengthening, cardiovascular, and lengthening exercises develops long, lean muscles, improves posture, increases metabolism and adds flexibility to the spine. IM=X changes body composition (muscle to fat ratio). It attacks excess bulk in the hips and thighs and tightens the body’s core muscles for rock-hard abs. And, since IM=X targets the pelvic floor, it can also enhance sexual experience and prevent urinary incontinence (UI). Our members consistently report a significant loss of inches from attending 3 sessions weekly.
How can IM=X® help my back pain?
Our back care program (offered by IM=X Spinal Fitness Certified Instructors) provides a viable non-operative approach to resolving general back pain. Our approach to back exercise goes beyond general practices to correct spinal alignment, mobility, muscle recruitment patterns and strength. Our unique approach towards conditioning the Spine Stabilization System is at the heart of our back care solution. Regular sessions under the supervision of a Doctor or Physical Therapist will significantly improve trunk muscle strength, spinal alignment and recovery from back pain.
How do I get started in the IM=X® program?
We recommend several private sessions to learn the technique and the patented reformer equipment (the Xercizer). Then you can join our Semi-Private Membership Program where there can be 2-8 participants per session and a wide variety of class formats which combine our reformer, mat, yoga, ballet bar, cycling, etc…. As a Semi-Private Training Member you can attend as many sessions as you like with just one monthly fee.
How do I choose an instructor or personal trainer?
All of the personal trainers and instructors at the IM=X Pilates Studio franchise are qualified to provide you with this incredible training. Our franchises send their staff to our educational institute in New York City where they learn from Master Trainers who are leaders in the fitness industry. There are 9 levels of education provided to all franchise staff — a process that is extensive, thorough and proprietary. Ask your studio owner which programs are available to you!BOOK A CLASS
